Employees Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) makes the Universal Account Number (UAN) Mandatory for all Employees
What is Universal Account Number?
- EPFO has launched an Universal Account Number (UAN) based Member Portal to provide a number of facilities to its members through a single window. The UAN will act as an umbrella for the multiple Member Ids allotted to an individual by different establishments. The idea is to link multiple Member Identification Numbers (Member Id) allotted to a single member under single Universal Account Number. This will help the member to view details of all the Member Identification Numbers (Member Id) linked to it. The universal account number remains same through the lifetime of an employee. It does not change with the change in job. With this universal account number, the PF transfer process would be very easy as all the PF account of different job would be linked to UAN. Once the employee’s PF account is linked with UAN, It would be very difficult for the employer to withhold the employee’s PF balance.
Order by the EPFO:-
- The EPFO vide order dated 22nd June 2015, has stated that the Universal Account Number (UAN) will be mandatory for all employers covered under the Employees’ Provident Funds and Miscellaneous Provisions Act 1952.
- Failure on the part of the employer to adhere to the orders after September will amount to non compliance and will be liable for action under the Employee Provident Fund Act, 1952.
